The commands, windows and environments that brought our computers to life.

From the command line to graphical interfaces, operating systems shaped how we use computers. This collection brings together earlier releases, familiar screens and stories of everyday use, alongside information about the computers they ran on.

Ten selected operating systems or significant releases per decade, from the 1960s to the 2020s, focusing on PC history and its roots. This is a historical selection, not an absolute ranking. GM-NAA I/O (1956) introduces the collection: the earliest electronic computers had no operating system. The 2020s are still in progress.

IBSYS

MCP

Atlas Supervisor

Ο Atlas Supervisor αναπτύχθηκε για τον υπολογιστή Atlas, στο πλαίσιο συνεργασίας του Πανεπιστημίου του Manchester με τη Ferranti και άλλους συντελεστές.

DTSS

Το Dartmouth Time-Sharing System, γνωστό ως DTSS, τέθηκε σε λειτουργία το 1964 στο Dartmouth College.

EXEC 8

Το EXEC 8, γνωστό και ως EXEC VIII, αναπτύχθηκε για τον UNIVAC 1108 στη δεκαετία του 1960, με αφετηρία το 1964.

DOS/360

Το DOS/360 κυκλοφόρησε το 1966 για μικρότερες διαμορφώσεις της οικογένειας IBM System/360.

OS/360

Το OS/360 αποτέλεσε βασικό μέρος της στρατηγικής της IBM για την οικογένεια System/360.
