    A PC.GR INITIATIVE

    The proposal behind the map

A new strategy for cultural, scientific and tourism development in Greece.

Technology Tourism connects technology, science, industrial heritage, innovation and the museum experience with tourism development and cultural outreach.

As visitors seek authentic, hands-on and educational experiences, technology and science museums can become focal points for a new model of cultural and educational tourism.

The experience can extend beyond a museum visit: from the history of technology and the development of science to robotics and artificial intelligence, telecommunications, industrial history, digital applications and the technologies of the future.

    What Technology Tourism stands for

The proposal treats technology as a cultural asset that can support tourism development, education, innovation and cultural diplomacy. It connects the wider visibility of cities and regions with stronger local economies.

It also highlights the importance of:

    • preserving technological exhibits,
    • sharing the history of modern technology,
    • connecting young people with science,
    • creating cultural experiences for all ages.

Technology Tourism can be a natural development of museum tourism, science tourism and industrial tourism.

    The proposed role of NOESIS

This proposal identifies the NOESIS Science Center and Technology Museum as a potential national hub and lead coordinator for the development of Technology Tourism in Greece. Its history, experience, facilities and public profile form the starting point for this approach.

Within an agreed partnership, it could:

    • lead a nationwide network of technology and science museums,
    • coordinate joint activities,
    • develop shared cultural and tourism routes,
    • support a shared digital identity,
    • connect the museum experience with contemporary tourism.

The aim is to establish a Technology Tourism Hub for Greece, with the potential to become a reference point for Southeast Europe.

A nationwide network of technology museums

The proposal calls for a shared national framework for cooperation that could connect:

    • technology museums and science centres,
    • university collections,
    • industrial museums,
    • historical technology archives,
    • private technology collections.

Such a network would aim to provide joint promotion, shared activities, exhibit exchanges, combined tickets and routes, and attract visitors from Greece and abroad.

A proposed Technology Arc of Greece could link Thessaloniki, Athens, Patras, Volos, Lavrio, Syros and other cities with a technological, industrial or scientific heritage.

    Opportunities for development

    Technology Tourism could contribute to:

    • new cultural routes,
    • more school and educational visits,
    • the development of conference and science tourism,
    • stronger local economies,
    • partnerships with universities and research institutions,
    • digital applications and interactive experiences.

It could also support city identity and promotion (city branding), international visibility and cultural innovation.

Thessaloniki as a proposed capital of Technology Tourism

The proposal highlights Thessaloniki as a starting point for this initiative, drawing on:

    • its university community,
    • its scientific institutions,
    • the history of technology and industry in the city,
    • its experience in hosting exhibitions,
    • NOESIS as a centre for science and technology.

Through Technology Tourism, the city could develop a new international cultural identity, a contemporary vision for development and a new focus for thematic tourism.

    A shared vision for Greece

Technology Tourism is proposed as a strategic approach that brings together culture, science, education, technology and tourism development.

Through institutions such as NOESIS, Greece could contribute to a contemporary European model connecting technological heritage with culture and tourism.

The proposal envisages a potential leadership role for NOESIS, with the aim of creating a unified network of technology museums and a national framework for wider cultural and technological engagement.

A development proposal presented by PC.gr. The partnerships, network and joint activities described would require agreement from the organisations involved.
