On this TECHDAY in history, on December 7th 1935, TDK Corporation was founded by Kenzo Saito in Tokyo, Japan. Its initial goal was to produce Yogoro Kato and Takeshi Takei’s invention, the iron-based magnetic material ferrite.

The company initially focused on producing electronic materials, such as ferrite and ceramic capacitors. In the 1940s and 1950s, TDK expanded its product line to include magnetic tapes and audio tapes. The company’s name changed to TDK Electronics Co., Ltd. in 1964. In 1967, it was, then, listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

Later it began manufacturing magnetic tape, and compact cassette tapes. The TDK Corporation produced an extensive variety of magnetic and optical media, including several videotape formats, blank CD-R, and recordable DVD discs.

Nowadays it is a multinational corporation manufacturing electronic components and data storage media.The company operates in a wide range of industries, including automotive, industrial, and consumer electronics, and has a strong presence in both the Japanese and global markets. TDK continues to invest in research and development to create new products and technologies that meet the changing needs of its customers.
