TECHDAY 25 January New York calling San Fransisco

New York calling San Fransisco | Techday, January 25th

Alexander Graham Bell inaugurated U.S. transcontinental telephone service on this TECHDAY in history, on January 25th 1915, speaking from New York to Thomas Watson in San Francisco. President Woodrow Wilson and the mayors of New York and San Francisco also participated in the call. The call was set up to happen on a day to coincide with the Panama–Pacific International Exposition celebrations.

On this techday, Bell made the transcontinental wired telephone call from his AT&T office in New York calling San Fransisco, managing to be heard by his assistant in San Francisco, over a two-mile cable stretched between Cambridge and Boston.

Alexander Bell was the first one to patent a practical telephone among many other innovations. The Scottish engineer co-founded the American Telephone and Telegraph Company (AT&T), as well, back in 1885. His work on hearing devices and telecommunications gravely influenced by his family’s state. During his productive years as an inventor, he focused on optical telecommunications, aeronautics, even hydraulics!
