On this TECHDAY in history, in 1889, a company that would one day become one of the world’s most powerful video gaming companies, named Nintendo, was founded in Kyoto, Japan, by Fusagirou Yiamauchi. Until 1963, it manufactured exclusively Japanese decks of cards (Hanafuda). Although the company had been primarily involved in cards for almost a century, its transition into the world of video gaming would lead to a cataclysmic evolution. Its entry into the world of electronic entertainment came in 1974, when it signed a distribution contract for the Magnavox Odyssey. Some of the company’s most famous game series are Mario, Pokemon, Legends of Zelda and Donkey Kong.
