TECHDAY 21 May IBM’s first electronic computer

One of IBM’s earliest achievements was introducing the IBM 701 on this TECHDAY in history, in 1952, a computer that marked a watershed moment for IBM. The announcement of the IBM 701 marked a shift from the company’s traditional business model of supplying products like punched cards and paper tape to becoming an innovator in computing technology. Nineteen of the machines were sold, mainly to the government and military installations. They rented for $8,100 per month (equivalent to $56.000 in 2010).
