TECHDAY 2 December The first nuclear reactor

Chicago Pile-1 | World’s first artificial nuclear reactor built | Techday, December 2nd

On this TECHDAY in history, on December 2nd 1942, the world’s first artificial, self-sustaining, nuclear chain reaction took place. It happened in the world’s first artificial nuclear reactor “Chicago Pile-1 (CP-1)”, which was built by the University of Chicago’s Metallurgical Laboratory, under the original Stagg Field. The experiment was led and supervised by Enrico Fermi and the secret development of this reactor was part of the Manhattan Project, an effort by the Allies to develop nuclear weapons during World War 2.

The experiment was a major milestone in the development of nuclear energy and laid the foundation for the development of larger and more powerful reactors. Today, nuclear power is a significant source of energy around the world, with over 400 reactors in operation. CP-1 was dismantled in 1957. On the site of the original pile a marker is evident even today to commemorate the historic event.

This was just a snapshot on the presentation of the techday series. Gather more information on the matter. Indulge into the history by further reading more.
