CGI animated film award | Techday, March 29thΒ

On this TECHDAY in history, on March 29th 1989, Pixar won an Academy Award for Tin Toy, the first entirely computer-animated work to win in the best animated short film category. Pixar,Β  now a division of Disney, continued its success with a string of shorts. The first entirely computer-animated feature-length film was the best-selling Toy Story.

In the short film (five minutes long), directed by former Disney animator John Lasseter, stars Tinny, a tin one-man band toy, attempting to escape from an infant, Billy. It was the third short film produced by the company’s small animation division and a risky investment.

Tin Toy premiered in a partially completed edit at the SIGGRAPH convention in August 1988 to a standing ovation from scientists and engineers. It later went on to claim Pixar’s first Oscar with the 1989 Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film, becoming the first CGI film to win an Oscar.
