Lotus 1-2-3…go! | Techday, January 26thΒ
On this TECHDAY in history, on January 26th 1983, the first killer application for the IBM-PC, Lotus 1-2-3, was released. Lotus achieved huge popularity and success within the young IBM-PC compatible standard; of course, this was preceded by the success of VisiCalc. Lotus was designed by people who were part of the development of VisiCalc, and it heavily inspired their work.
Apart from promoting the professional use of the IBM-PC, Lotus also was one of the first widely advertised applications, being shown in TV commercials for example. For a while the program could withstand the competition of Borland’s Quattro Pro, but it wasn’t as successful when faced with Microsoft Excel. Lotus 1-2-3 continued to evolve until 2002 when its last version was released.
It is notable, though, that the Lotus 1-2-3 has been the spreadsheet standard for two whole decades, the 1980s and 1990s alike! Amazing!
