Nintendo founding | Techday, September 23rd
On this TECHDAY in history, on September 23rd 1889, a company that would one day become one of the world’s most powerful video gaming companies, named Nintendo, was founded in Kyoto, Japan, by Fusagirou Yiamauchi. Until 1963, it manufactured exclusively Japanese decks of cards (Hanafuda). Although the company had been primarily involved in cards for almost a century, its transition into the world of video gaming would lead to a cataclysmic evolution. Its entry into the world of electronic entertainment came in 1974, when it signed a distribution contract for the Magnavox Odyssey. Some of the company’s most famous game series are Mario, Pokemon, Legends of Zelda and Donkey Kong.
In the 1950s, Nintendo began to branch out into other areas, such as toy making and electronic games. In the 1970s, the company released its first home video game console, the Color TV-Game. However, it wasn’t until the release of the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1985 that the company found global success.
The success of the NES led to the release of several other consoles, including the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES), Nintendo 64, GameCube, Wii, Wii U, and the Nintendo Switch. Today, Nintendo is one of the most well-known and successful video game companies in the world and continues to produce some of the most popular games and consoles on the market.
