Apple has a new CEO | Gil Amelio appointed the third CEO | Techday, February 2nd
On this TECHDAY in history, on February 2nd 1996, Gil Amelio is appointed CEO of Apple, making him the third one in the history of the company. He orchestrated the purchase of NeXT, the company Steve Jobs founded after he left Apple in 1985. Steve Jobs joined up as a consultant at Apple, leading to a chain of events ultimately culminating with the firing of Gil Amelio after 499 days on the job. Steve Jobs then took over from him and led Apple back into profitability.
Amelio was a researcher for Bell Labs and has been for years in the development of the first chare-coupled device (CCD). He later worked for Fairchild Semiconductor, conglomerate Rockwell International and the National Semiconductor as a president as well.
When he was appointed CEO of Apple, Amelio cited several problems. Some of them included the shortage of cash and liquidity, but also the low quality of the products. To face the problems, he had cut costs and reduced the work force of the company, among other measures as well.
