Birthday of Mark Elliot Zuckerberg | Techday, May 14th
This TECHDAY, on May 14th 1984, marks the birthday of Mark Elliot Zuckerberg, an American media magnate, internet entrepreneur, and philanthropist. Mark Zuckerberg is known for co-founding the social media website Facebook and its parent company Meta Platforms (formerly Facebook, Inc), of which he is the CEO (chief executive officer), chairman, and major shareholder.
He studied in Harvard University computer science and psychology. While at Harvard, Zuckerberg and some of his friends developed a website called Facemash, which allowed users to rate the attractiveness of other students’ photos. The site was a success, but it also attracted controversy, and the University subsequently disciplined him.
In 2004, Zuckerberg and a few of his friends launched a new website, called TheFacebook. The website was designed to be a more streamline version of the original site. The website quickly gained popularity, and within a few years it had millions of users. In 2006, Zuckerberg and his co-founders dropped out of college to focus on Facebook full-time, and the company rapidly grew into a massive social media platform with billions of users around the world.
In addition to his work at Facebook, Zuckerberg involves in a number of philanthropic endeavors. He and his wife, Priscilla Chan, have pledged to give away 99% of their Facebook shares to charitable causes through the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative.
